I recently had the privilege of getting to know a wonderful lady, friend and mother. She has overcome so much adversity from birth… through growing up… but has become the most amazing inspiration to those around her! It was a honour to have gotten to know her a little better… I would love you to read her story… if you know a special lady in your world… who has overcome some huge obstacles in her life.. please nominate her for this amazing way to celebrate them! My name is Karmin and I was born on April 22, 1981 in Regina.
My parents did not expect to have a baby with a birth defect, but they still loved and cared about me just like any child deserves to be loved! I was born with almost no hearing and also cleft nose lip and palate. As a baby, my mom had to feed me every 2-3 hours with a glass tube that they use to feed baby lambs.
I was a very silent but very content baby and child. Some of the difficult struggles as a baby and child including learning to lip read at a very young age. I spent alot of my childhood in and out of surgeries and figuring out what the doctor had planned for me next. Some of the struggles for my parents included trying to teach a child who doesnt hear how to read, their ABC’S, and also what to say to strangers who would just stare at me without asking or saying anything. I spent alot of time alone. Some of my favourite things to do as a young child were playing barbies, cabbage patch dolls and carebears. I also loved to do hair and was taught how to frenchbraid at the age of 3 1/2.
I have one older and one yournger sibling. I am sure it was very difficult being an older sister to a very needy child who took alot of attention to care for. When I was old enough to go to school my mom fought for me to go to the public school, she stood down at the public school board for one week until they decided it would be ok for me to attend the regular school system instead of a school for the deaf and hard of hearing. I have felt unpretty, different from other people, low selfesteem, low self confidence, depression, anger, I have been bullied, teased in so many different ways.
I have let it bother me at times but since I went to Marca College and got my hairdressing certificate I have felt on top of the world! It forced me to do what I love… hair. It has also forced me to love and respect myself and also gain my self confidence and and my self esteem back. Once I started to feel good about myself, my appearance started to change and I started doing my hair and makeup and nails everything I adore!
I am glad I ended up being cleft palate so that I can help other people through tough situations. I now have had people come to me because they have a surgery coming up and are worried. I tell them what they should expect. Usually after we have talked they feel fine and brave to walk into an opperation. I have had clients with children who are also cleft palate and I cling to them - all I want to do is protect them from the world but I know I cant do that! So what I can offer is my support as most of them are young ladies they feel the same as I did. I felt very excluded from my peers, and low self confidence and self esteem and also low self love…. I tell them that no matter what anyone says, you are beautiful, talented, inspiring, and strong. When you are a child who goes through alot of mental and verbal and some emotional abuse from your peers you kind of give up on yourself as you dont feel important to society. I am lucky I had some amazing people who supported me through all the really hard years but also are still here with me through these good years. Its always important to let everyone you know who has had some struggles that you are proud of them and that they are doing so well and also that they are not alone! Everybody needs somebody sometime in their life! You never know when that day will come, so if you see someone struggling please offer support and help! I know I would help anyone on the spot and if I couldn’t then I would guide them to someone who could!
